A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors

Enter to win a Grand Prize of $5,000.00, plus a $5,000.00 matching donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and your story featured in the upcoming book, A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors

How to Enter/Eligibility: To enter, write a 1,000- to 2,000-word personal essay about the experiences and emotions of living with-and living after-breast cancer. Possible story themes include but are not limited to: diagnosis, treatment, emotional impact, support systems, healthy lifestyle practices, emotional healing, coping mechanisms, impact on loved ones, effect on friendships, effect on career/work, effect on romance/intimacy, life lessons learned, personal transformation, silver linings, gratitude, triumph over trials, body image, and more. All themes and writing styles considered, as long as the story is positive. We do not publish articles, fiction, poetry, profiles, eulogies, sermons, testimonials, letters, commentary, expository essays, persuasive essays, diatribes, academic papers, confessionals, erotica, pornography, or experimental literature. Stories must be original, true, written in English, and either from the first person or third person point of view. Plagiarism in any form will be grounds for automatic disqualification from the contest. By entering the contest, you represent and warrant that you are the sole and original author of your entry and that your entry does not infringe the copyrights or other proprietary rights of any third party. One entry per household. Entries must be received no later than December 31, 2007. Contest is open to all legal residents of the United States and Canada (except Quebec), ages 18 and older and of the age of majority in the jurisdiction in which they reside, except employees of Hearst Communications, Inc., F+W Publications, Inc., and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure (together, "Sponsors"), their parent, subsidiary and affiliate companies, their advertising and promotional agencies, and the immediate families of the foregoing employees. Each winning entry may be published in any medium by Sponsors without any additional compensation to winner. Entries cannot be acknowledged or returned and become the property of Sponsors upon receipt. For stories not selected for publication, any and all rights to those stories will revert to the submitter, effective June 30, 2008.

Selection of Winners: Adams Media will screen all entries and forward the top one hundred (100) best contributed stories to Redbook for final judging. From all submissions forwarded by Adams Media to Redbook, Redbook will select one (1) grand prize winner and three (3) runners-up winners based on criteria in writer's guidelines. This selection will take place on or about February 1, 2008. The decision of the judges is absolute and final in all matters. Winners will be notified by telephone or email on or about April 30, 2008 by Adams Media.

Prizes: There will be one (1) grand-prize winner of the contest and three (3) runners-up. All four stories shall be published in A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors which is scheduled to be published on or about September 2008. The grand-prize winning story will also be published or excerpted in the October 2008 issue of Redbook magazine. Additionally, the grand-prize winner will also receive five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) in prize money, plus an additional five thousand dollar ($5,000.00) donation will be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the grand prize winner's name. The total retail value of the grand prize package is $10,000.00. Each of the three (3) runners-up will receive a complete Cup of Comfort library, consisting of all Cup of Comfort books in print at the time of the publication of A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors. The approximate total retail value of each runner up's prize package is $217.95. No transfer or substitution of prizes except at Sponsors' sole discretion. The value of any substituted prizes will be equal to or greater than that of the originally announced prizes. The odds of winning depend on the number and quality of entries received. Each winner will be required to sign a Contributor Agreement within ten (10) days from the date it was sent, or another winner may be selected. The Contributor Agreement will grant exclusive permission for Sponsors to publish entry in Redbook Magazine, on the Web site currently located at www.redbookmag.com, in the book A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors, and in all other publications for the duration of copyright, as well as grant permission to identify the entrant's name in connection with the contest in any and all publications from any Sponsor.

Second Chance Winners: Approximately forty-five (45) additional stories will be selected by Adams Media from all contest submissions for publication in A Cup of Comfort for Breast Cancer Survivors. Contributors will be compensated in the amount of one hundred dollars ($100.00) by Adams Media for these stories upon publication of the book, and also receive one (1) free copy of the book. Second Chance Winners will also be required to sign a Contributor Agreement, as detailed above, within ten (10) days from the date of mailing, or another winner may be selected.

Release: If your entry is selected, you agree that Sponsors may use your name, photograph, and likeness for advertising, promotional, and other purposes in any media without further approval or compensation, except as may be prohibited by law.

Limitations of Liability/Reserved Rights: Neither Sponsors, their parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies, nor their promotional agencies shall have any obligation or responsibility with regard to (i) entries that contain inaccurate information or do not comply with these rules, (ii) entries, prize claims, or notifications that are lost, late, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, or otherwise not received by the intended recipient, in whole or in part.

Contest subject to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations; void where prohibited or restricted by law.
